Dylan, an 8th grader from Burke County, North Carolina, asked: Have you seen any sharks or whales on your adventurous journey?
08/19/03 Lucinda, from Knox County, Tennessee, asked: I noticed that temperature data at equipment depth was not available in your first two logs. Would that be important data in determining the forms of sea life that you might sample? Was the gauge malfunctioning? Assuming that the temperature decreases at greater depths, is the interior of the submersible heated for the comfort of the crew?
08/19/03 Meredith from Watauga County, North Carolina, asked: Have you spotted any young turtles in the sargassum that you have collected. If so, what species are they?
08/19/03 Sarah from Watauga County, North Carolina, asked: Last year our teacher, Alan Felker, found the pale orange coral that is shown on your web site. [photo] Have you determined yet if it is a new species or subspecies?
08/20/03 Lucinda from Knox County, Tennessee, asked: You mentioned the Styrofoam cups that collapse at great depths. Would the same phenomena occur with a basketball, tennis ball or balloon? Would a ball reinflate when it returned to the surface? Have you experimented with the behavior of any other objects at great depths?
08/21/03 Tim, from McDowell County, N.C., asked: Has there been a 2-3 degree drop in water temperature in that area as well as the coasts compared to past years at this time? Consequences if temperature drops continue? Any Theories?
08/21/03 Andrew Flynt, a NCSU Student, asked: I am interested in majoring in marine sciences while here at NCSU. As a fisherman I am particularly interested in the your findings from the "Snowy Wreck" area and the food web from deep coral habitats. What kind of information has been found on large fish habitat in these areas?
08/21/03 Mike, from Alachua County, Florida, asked: How do deep sea creatures make that light so they can see?
08/21/03 Jon, from Chatham County, North Carolina, asked Doni Angell: Have you been down in the submersible yet? If so, what about the dive made the biggest impression on you? And how will you relay that experience to your students?
08/21/03 Mike, 18, from Wake County, North Carolina, asked: What got you interested in the work you are doing now?
08/22/03 Several people have asked: What kinds of creatures have you found? Or Have you seen any x (whales, turtles, sharks, etc.)?
08/22/03 Norman, a 5th grader in Raleigh, N.C, asked: Where do you sleep on the boat?
08/22/03 Shane, a 5th grader in Wake County, N.C., asked:
How did you catch the marine life, and what kind of experiments are being made?
08/23/03 Kimberly, a high school senior from Wake County, North Carolina, asked Liz Baird: What is your favorite piece of equipment, and what does it do? Which piece of equipment gives you the most accurate data?
08/24/03 Danielle, a high school senior from Wake County, North Carolina, asked: What makes the coral you have found different from the other coral along the coast?
08/24/03 Danielle, a high school senior in Wake County, North Carolina, asked: What is the most interesting or unique creature you have seen?
08/24/03 A North Carolina State University student asked: When you are in the submersible are you able to see the ocean life around you through some type of scope or is it impossible, and the sub is just used for taking pictures that will be developed later?
08/24/03 Leigh, a North Carolina State University student, asked: Have you ever witnessed the finding of a new species of marine life? Are there opportunities for a student like me to get out on the ocean for a summer study program? Also, is live rock harvesting, mining, and cable laying doing very noticeable damage?
08/24/03 Sarah, a North Carolina State University student, asked: From reading about the artificial "reefs" caused by events like shipwrecks, it seems that they attract sea life and may even be beneficial. Based on your knowledge, is this an accurate statement?
08/24/03 Patrick, a North Carolina State University student, asked: What kind of technology do you have on the ship, as far as computers, special radars or submarines? Also, have you ever found anything valuable, like artifacts or treasures?
08/25/03 Tony, a NCSU student, asked: Are there any signs that you can see indicating that you are past the shelf, just from looking out on the side of the boat?
08/25/03 Adam, a NCSU student, asked: How do deep sea marine animals survive without sunlight and warmth of the sun? Also, what do they eat?
08/25/03 Nick J., a NCSU Freshman, asked: What made you become so interested in marine sciences?
08/25/03 James, a NCSU student, asked: What is the biggest coral reef that you've encountered while diving?
