Q: Would it be possible for Ms. Baird to conduct distance learning programs from the deck of your ship? Could these be done on the Web? It might be interesting for students and teachers to see real-time video of the catch that you bring in and hear or read the commentary by the scholars that you have on hand.

A: It is possible for me to conduct distance learning programs from the Seward Johnson. Unfortunately, I did not know that this ship had that capability. The ship we used last year (Seward Johnson II) was not outfitted for live feeds, so we did not plan to use the system this year. If you check out the Ocean Explorer Web site (www.oceanexplorer.noaa.gov), you can see video clips from this year’s expedition and read essays from the scientists. If we are on board the Seward Johnson again, I will certainly plan to use its distance learning capabilities next year.
