Q: What is an "MPA?"

A: An "MPA" is a marine protected area. These locations used to be called marine reserves. They are designed to help protect fish species and habitats. They provide a network of specific marine environments that can be closed to fishing permanently or intermittently. Protecting these areas means that the fish can reproduce successfully. Researchers use many methods to help determine the best locations for the MPAs.
