Greetings from Kirkenes, Norway!

Our journey started at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, where we had to check our "carry-on" bags. Our flight was delayed so we arrived in Newark with only 20 minutes to make it to the next leg. Of course, we had to wait for the "carry-on" bags that had been checked but amazingly we made the flight to Norway (we were the last to board). We enjoyed talking with other travelers as we flew across the Atlantic.

The Oslo airport was a beautiful reflection of the Scandinavian attention to design. We had an incredible view of the stunning Norwegian coastline from the air as we flew to Kirkenes.

Pizza is expensive compared to home — ours was $30! Then again, pizza at home doesn't feature reindeer meat. Gasoline is also quite high compared to North Carolina, averaging $7 a gallon. We have met some of the other participants in this mission and look forward to getting to know the rest of the science party. We will spend the next day getting our things organized and exploring the town of Kirkenes.
